Need some game suggestions!

It was long overdue, but I finally bought a new PC. And not only is it new, it is also kind of a beast. My old HP Pavilion had a single core P4 and a 128MB ATI graphics card, and I could play Half-Life 2 (albeit at its most minimum requirements). My new Dell XPS-15z is a quad core i7 with a 2GB . It is a little ridiculous. But it does mean that I can play any game my greedy little heart desires. Needless to say, a lot has happened since Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, and I’m a little overwhelmed by the back-log of games now at my disposal.

So I pose this question: what titles would you recommend I check out? Your picks don’t have to be the latest games out, either. Any game that has stood out to you over, say, the past 3 years would be a good place to start.

  1. Well, since you’ve been gone from gaming, no one has written a better game than Half Life 2… so… Half Life 2, Half Life 2.1 and Half Life 2.2 are all in the Orange Box along with Portal.

Civ 5 is pretty great if you want something you can play bit at a time and also for 22 hours straight.

If I was you, I’d buy Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, because apparently that is great.

If you aren’t interested in pouring money away and want a wee Diablo style game with neat gameplay and endless bad guys to smite, I really like Torchlight.

Lastly, apparently Dragon Age Origins is great on the PC.

All my other favourite games I associate with the trigger and toggle twitching of the 360 controller.

  2. Thanks for the recommendations, David, although you don’t need to stop short at the games that use a 360 controller. Don’t forget that the OS on my Dell is a Microsoft product. In fact, Vista and Windows 7 have pre-installed drivers for the 360 controller, and even older XP machines can have those same drivers installed. So as far as the type of games I can play is concerned, if you can play it on the xbox, you can play it on my laptop.

  3. Oh, then Bioshock, Assassin’s Creed 2 (fav game evar!) and Brotherhood, Red Dead Redemption, Portal 2, I know I’m forgetting someone, I know I’m forgetting someone…

Oh, and if you can get it, if they ever made a PC port of it, absolutely get Psychonauts.

  4. All the games I want to play that I can’t plan on my Xbox are on GOG, and they cost about as much as games for my phone cost.

  5. To get the ball rolling, I bought the Orange Box. My old machine couldn’t really handle Half-Life 2 and reached a point near the beginning of the game where it would just crash.

    I’ve always felt cheated.

Steam is selling the Orange Box for $20, which is a lot of game play for the price of one Warhammer 40k Finecast miniature. Color me stoked.
